Hailu Mekonnen (born April 4, 1980 in Arsi Province ) is an Ethiopian middle and long distance runner .

Life

In 1998 he won bronze at the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Marrakech and silver over 5000 m at the African Athletics Championships in Dakar . The following year he won the junior title and the bronze medal on the short distance at the World Cross Country Championships in Belfast . A seventh place over 5000 m at the World Athletics Championships in Seville was followed by gold over 1500 m at the Pan-African Games in Johannesburg . In 2000 he was sixth on the short distance at the World Cross Country Championships in Vilamoura and reached the semi-finals at the Olympic Games in Sydney over 1500 m.

In 2001 he was seventh over 1500 m at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Lisbon , tenth on the short distance at the World Cross Country Championships in Ostend and eighth over 5000 m at the World Championships in Edmonton . In 2002 he won bronze in the short distance race of the Cross Country World Championships in Dublin , in 2003 silver over 5000 m at the Pan-African Games in Abuja .

Then he switched to road running . In 2005 he won the Montferland Run , and in 2007 he was eighth in the half marathon competition of Reims Marathon . In 2009 he finished second at the Great Scottish Run , but did not finish at the World Half Marathon Championships in Birmingham . In 2010 he finished ninth in the Barcelona Marathon , eighth in the Paris Marathon , won the Great Scottish Run and finished fifth in the Amsterdam Marathon .

In 2011 he won the Tokyo Marathon .
