Cross Country World Championships 2000
The 28th IAAF World Cross Country Championships the IAAF took place on 18 and 19 March 2000 in Vilamoura ( Portugal instead).
course
The venue was the Vilamoura sports complex, six kilometers from the center of the marina in the Algarve region. After a 600 m long start track, a 1790 m long lap was run, which was extended to a large lap of 2110 m with an additional loop. Five inclines had to be overcome per lap.
The men completed three large and three small laps (12.3 km) on the long distance, the women on the long distance and the juniors one large and three small laps (8.08 km), the juniors one large and two small laps (6 , 29 km) and the short distance athletes of both sexes two small laps (4.18 km).
Competitions
The junior women's race, the men's short-distance race and the women's long-distance race took place on March 18, and the other three races on the following day. There was $ 97,000 in prize money for each adult race, with the winners accounting for $ 40,000 each.
As with the first edition of the short-distance competition in 1998, the Kenyan team won with the best possible number of points. With a sprint victory, the 1998 world champion John Kemboi Kibowen prevailed against Sammy Kipketer and last year's runner-up Paul Malakwen Kosgei . The Ukrainian Serhiy Lebid was the first European to finish tenth.
On the long haul, defending champion Paul Tergat and last year's runner-up Patrick Mutuku Ivuti stayed in the lead for a long time, but had to let the Moroccan-born Belgian Mohammed Mourhit and the Ethiopian Assefa Mezgebu pass on the home straight . With Mourhit became a European world champion for the first time since 1985, when Carlos Lopes won the title. Tergat had to be content with the bronze medal after five wins in a row.
In the women's long-distance race, Derartu Tulu won her third title after 1995 and 1997 after a baby break. Sonia O'Sullivan , 1998 world champion and also a new mother, was unable to stay at the top after just four kilometers and came in seventh. Paula Radcliffe , who had won one bronze and two silver medals in the three previous events, was also a victim of the high pace . She fell back on the last kilometer, then collapsed behind the finish line, coming in fifth and beaten by Lydia Cheromei by a second , and had to be tended by paramedics for a few minutes. With a strong final sprint, Derartu Tulu finally prevailed against defending champion Gete Wami and last year's fifth Susan Chepkemei on the home straight .
The most dramatic race of the event developed for the women on the short distance. Both Sonia O'Sullivan and Paula Radcliffe opted for a double start. While O'Sullivan only came in 15th place, Radcliffe was able to cope with the enormous pace set by Kutre Dulecha , third in 1998. At the beginning of the second round, a group of four had formed, which also included Zahra Ouaziz , who was second in 1998, and Margaret Ngotho . Ouaziz took the lead on double hill one kilometer from the finish, and at first only Radcliffe followed, while the two East Africans held back. On the home stretch, however, both Ouaziz and Radcliffe lost their strength, and in the end it was Kutre Dulecha who won ahead of Ouaziz and Cheruiyot, who were classified at the same time, while Radcliffe was fourth, just one second behind.
