Paulo Guerra

Paulo Alexandre Martins Guerra (born August 21, 1970 in Barrancos ) is a former Portuguese long-distance runner .

Life

Over 10,000 m he was at the European Athletics Championships in 1994 in Helsinki fifth and at the World Athletics Championships in 1995 in Gothenburg eighth. In 1996 he gave up over 10,000 m at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in the preliminary run and finished second in the half marathon of the European Clubs Cup. In 1998 he finished sixth in the Berlin Marathon . At the 2001 World Half Marathon Championships , he came in 32nd place.

However, he had his greatest successes in cross-country running . In 1994 in Almswick he became the first European cross-country champion, in 1995 in Almswick he succeeded in defending his title, and in 1996 in Charleroi he won silver. An eleventh place in Ferrara in 1998 was followed by two more titles in 1999 in Velenje and 2000 in Malmö . In 2001 in Thun he was tenth, and in 2002 in Medulin he came in 20th place. With the team he won gold in 1994 and 1996, silver in 1995, 1998 and 1999 and bronze in 2001 and 2002.

At the Cross Country World Championships in 1993 in Amorebieta-Etxano, with a 21st place, he contributed to the bronze medal of the Portuguese team. He finished sixth in Durham in 1995 and twelfth in Marrakech in 1998 . He won bronze in Belfast in 1999 , making him the first male European on a podium position since 1989. In Vilamoura in 2000 he came in 25th and won bronze with the team, and in 2001 in Ostend he was fourth.

He won national titles twice over 10,000 m (1994, 1995) and five times in cross country (1995–1997, 1999, 2001).
