Quarteira is a municipality and city in the Algarve in Portugal . It belongs to the Loulé district , has an area of 38.2 km² and 21,798 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011), which corresponds to a population density of 571 inhabitants / km².
The place was given the status of a small town ( Vila ) on June 28, 1984 and a town ( Cidade ) on May 13, 1999 .
In the urban area of Quarteira lies Vilamoura ("Moorish City"), a marina founded a few years ago with an attached holiday complex.
