Charles Waweru Kamathi (born May 18, 1978 in Mathari near Nyeri ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .

Athletic career

Kamathi set his best performance in the 10,000 meter run in Brussels in 1999. It was his first ever race in Europe.

He celebrated his greatest success at the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, when he won in 27: 53.25 minutes ahead of the Ethiopians Assefa Mezgebu and Haile Gebrselassie . He ended the winning streak of Gebrselassie, who, however, had paused for almost a year because of Achilles tendon problems before this race.

At the 2003 World Championships , Kamathi was seventh. In 2004 he won the African Championships, but finished only 13th at the Olympic Games . A year later he was twelfth at the 2005 World Championships .

At the 2001 Cross Country World Championships Kamathi won bronze in the long distance. He won with the team in 2001 and 2002 and came second in 2004 and 2005.

In 2002 Kamathi also took part in the world championships in the half marathon . He won with the team and was ninth in the individual standings. In his debut on the marathon course , he finished fourth in the Milan Marathon in 2007 in 2:11:25 h. In 2008 he came third in the Rotterdam Marathon in 2:07:33 h and in the Berlin Marathon in 2:07:48 h.

In 2010 he finished second at the Milan Marathon and won the Eindhoven Marathon .

Kamathi is 1.65 m tall and weighs 51 kg. He is trained by Gabriele Rosa and supervised by manager Federico Rosa.
