Paul Kipkoech

Paul Kipkoech (born January 6, 1963 in Kapsabet , † March 13, 1995 in Eldoret ) was a Kenyan long-distance runner .

At the first World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , Paul Kipkoech finished 9th in the 5000 meter run in 13: 37.44 minutes. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he was fifth in 13: 14.40 minutes.

At the Africa Games in 1987 near Nairobi, Paul Kipkoech won the 10,000 meter run and was second over 5000 meters. At the 1987 World Championships in Rome , Kipkoech ran a superior 10,000-meter race with intermediate sprints and slow laps. With this tactic he wore down his opponents, and his fiercest competitor, the Italian Francesco Panetta, had to tear down after kilometer 7. Kipkoech won in 27: 38.63 minutes ahead of Panetta, who just managed to save silver from Hansjörg Kunze from the GDR in 27: 48.98 minutes .

In 1985, 1987 and 1988 Paul Kipkoech was runner-up at the World Cross Country Championships . With the Kenyan team he won bronze in 1983, silver in 1985 and gold in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1990.

With a height of 1.73 m, his competition weight was 58 kg. Paul Kipkoech died at the age of 32 of complications from malaria .
