John Cheruiyot Korir

John Cheruiyot Korir (born December 13, 1981 in Kiramwok near Merigi , Bomet District , Rift Valley Province ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .

Korir started running in elementary school and won the national school championships in cross-country and over 10,000 meters in the third year of high school . A year after graduating from Merigi Secondary School , he was signed by the Italian manager Gianni Demadonna . In 2000 he won bronze in the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Vilamoura and won the Olympic elimination for the 10,000 meter run in 27: 48.42 minutes, which was a world best time for high altitudes. At the games in Sydney he was fifth.

In 2001 he was Kenyan champion in cross country and runner-up over 10,000 meters behind Charles Waweru Kamathi and eighth at the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton . In the same year he was recruited by the Kenyan army.

After his basic training, he returned to competition at the Kenyan championships and was again second over 10,000 meters, this time behind Paul Malakwen Kosgei . Over the same distance he just missed a medal in fourth place at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester , won silver at the African Championships in Radès and became military world champion.

In 2003 he became a Kenyan cross-country and 10,000-meter champion. He finished sixth at the World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne , fifth at the 10,000 meter run at the World Athletics Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis and fourth at the World Half Marathon Championships in Vilamoura .

Also in 2004 he placed in the front of the international championships, but without winning a medal. At the Olympic Games in Athens he was sixth and again fourth at the World Half Marathon Championships in New Delhi .

In 2005 he was ninth at the World Cross Country Championships in Saint-Galmier and in 2006 fourth over 10,000 meters at the African Championships in Bambous .

Korir is 1.72 m tall and weighs 57 kg. He belongs to the Kalenjin ethnic group and is the oldest of five siblings in a family that makes a living from growing tea. Korir lives in Kiramwok and Ngong , where the Kenyan army has a training camp. His trainer is Renato Canova.
