Merima Denboba (born August 21, 1974 in Arsi ) is a former Ethiopian long-distance runner .

successes

Denboba made a name for herself internationally as an extremely consistent cross-country runner . Between 1991 and 2003 she took part in a total of twelve cross-country world championships and only missed the 1996 event during this period. With a total of 15 medals, she is one of the most successful athletes in these championships. She won two of them in the individual long-distance classification, namely a silver medal in 1999 and a bronze medal in 2003. The rest she won as part of the Ethiopian team in the national championship, including six gold. She has also won numerous international cross-country races such as the Crosse Internacional de Oeiras or the Cross Internacional de Itálica .

Denboba achieved her best results on the track at the African Athletics Championships . In 1993 in Durban, she finished second in the 3000 meter run . In 1998 in Dakar and 2000 in Algiers she finished third in the 5000 meter run . At the global level, it did not quite match these successes. The fifth in the 10,000-meter run of the World Junior Athletics Championships in 1992 in Seoul could not qualify for the final of the 5000-meter run at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. At the World Athletics Championships in Athens in 1997 she was tenth over 5000 meters, at the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, she finished 13th.

Denboba achieved numerous victories in road runs . She won the Giro Media Blenio in 1994 and 2002 , the BOclassic in 1998 and 2000 , the Course de l'Escalade in 1999 , the Giro di Castelbuono in 2003 and the Lille half marathon in 2005 . In 2007 she won the premiere of the Lahore Marathon in 2:32:54 h and three months later she finished seventh at the Hamburg Marathon in exactly the same time. However, she achieved her most important result on the marathon distance in 2008 with third place in the Milan Marathon in a personal best of 2:29:57 h.

She was looked after by the Italian manager Gianni Demadonna .
