Worku Bikila

Worku Bikila (born May 6, 1968 in the province of Arsi ) is a former Ethiopian long-distance runner .

His first international success was winning the silver medal in the 5000 meter run at the African Athletics Championships in Mauritius in 1992 . In the same year he finished sixth over this distance at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . At the African Athletics Championships in Durban in 1993 , he was third and a short time later at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart fourth over 5000 m. After he had finished sixth at the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 1995 , he started at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta over 10,000 m . He won his preliminary run, but only reached 17th place in the final. At the 1997 World Championships in Athens he was twelfth over 5000 m.

After that, he increasingly focused on running on the road . Among other things, he won the Zevenheuvelenloop in 1997 . The following year he repeated his victory there and also prevailed at the Parelloop and the Tilburg Ten Miles . In 1999 he finished second in the Zevenheuvelenloop and in 2001 fourth in the 20 van Alphen . He finished eighth each at the Paris Marathon 2001 and the Paris Half Marathon 2002. Internationally, he last appeared at the 2002 Half Marathon World Championships in Brussels, where he came in 37th and, together with Tesfaye Jifar and Ambesse Tolosa, came third in the Team ranking won.

Worku Bikila is 1.75 m tall and weighed 59 kg when he was active. He runs a hotel in Addis Ababa and a well construction company named after him .
