Othmane Belfaa

Othmane Belfaa ( Arabic عثمان بلفاع; Born October 18, 1961 in Lille , France ) is a former Algerian athlete . His specialty was the high jump .

Othmane Belfaa first attracted international attention in 1979 when he became African champion with 2.15 m .

For Algeria, he took part in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . However, he failed clearly because of the qualifying height of 2.21 m required for the final. With a skipped 2.05 m he was only 13th in his group and was eliminated.

The year 1983 turned out to be more successful for Belfaa. He was able to win the Maghreb Athletic Championships in Casablanca with 2.18 m. At the Arab Athletics Championships in Amman , Jordan , he achieved his personal best with 2.28 m, which earned him the gold medal. There was another gold medal at the Mediterranean Games , which again took place in Casablanca. Belfaa managed 2.26 m here.

At the World Indoor Games in Bercy in 1985 , a forerunner of the World Indoor Athletics Championships , Belfaa reached 3rd place with 2.27 m. In 1987 he was able to defend his title at the Arab Athletics Championships , this time in Algiers , with 2.20 m. In the same year he won the high jump competition with 2.19 m at the Africa Games in Nairobi . In 1989 he became Arab champion for the third time in Cairo , this time 2.16 m were enough to win. In the same year he was a second time African champion in Lagos with a jump of 2.20 m. He was able to defend the title in Cairo in 1990 with 2.16 m.

Also in 1990 Othmane Belfaa won the Maghreb Championship again. With 2.20 m he won gold in Algiers. In 1991 another gold medal was added at the Mediterranean Games in Athens . Belfaa achieved another 2.28 m here. At the African Games in Cairo that year he won with 2.18 m. In 1992, at the African Championships, 2.16 m were enough for second place behind his compatriot Yacine Mousli .
