Mathew Kiplagat Sawe (born July 2, 1988 in Nandi County ) is a Kenyan high jumper and record holder of the national record.
Athletic career
Mathew Sawe gained his first international experience in 2010 at the African Championships in Nairobi , where he finished tenth with a skipped 2.05 m. Two years later he won the bronze medal at the African Championships in Porto-Novo with 2.15 m behind the Botswanian Kabelo Kgosiemang and Ali Mohd Younes Idriss from Sudan. He also competed in the 800-meter run , but retired there with 1: 56.29 minutes in the first lap. In 2014 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow for the first time, but retired there with 2.11 m in the qualification before he came in sixth at the African Championships in Marrakech with 2.15 m. In 2015 he finished fourth at the Africa Games in Brazzaville with a height of 2.19 m and was then sixth at the Military World Games in Mungyeon, South Korea, with 2.20 m. The following year he won the African Championships in Durban with a skipped 2.21 m, making him Kenya's first continental champion in this discipline.
In 2018 he again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , where he was eliminated again in the qualification with 2.15 m. He then successfully defended his title at the African Championships in Asaba with a height of 2.30 m and also equalized his own Kenyan national record with this height. He then represented Africa at the Continental Cup in Ostrava and was eighth there with 2.15 m. The following year he took part in the African Games in Rabat , but surprisingly had to admit defeat to South African Mpho Links with 2.15 m and thus secured the silver medal. For the first time he also qualified for the World Championships in Doha , where he was eliminated with 2.17 m in qualification .
From 2010 to 2014 and from 2017 to 2019 , Sawe was the Kenyan champion in high jump.
