The V. African Games , by 2012 Africa Games called (French .: V e Jeux africains , Eng .: 5th All-Africa Games ) found on 20 September to 1 October 1991 in Cairo , capital of Egypt , instead .
After the Fourth African Games in Nairobi in 1987 , due to political unrest and economic problems, could only take place nine years after the African Games in Algiers , the organizers managed to keep the four-year rhythm for the Games in North Africa.
On September 20, 1991, XY opened the games in the Cairo stadium . About 4,000 athletes from 43 African countries took part in the sports competitions. As in previous years, athletes from South Africa were excluded from the games due to the ongoing apartheid in the country. There were competitions in 18 sports with 214 decisions. For the first time competitions in the fields of field hockey and weightlifting were held at the African Games. The teams from Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria, Kenya and Algeria won the most gold medals.
