William Tanui

William Tanui ( William Kiptarus Tanui ; born February 22, 1964 in Kemeloi , Rift Valley Province ) is a former Kenyan middle-distance runner and Olympic champion .

Tanui came to international fame relatively late when he won the 1500 meter run at the Kenyan Commonwealth Games in 1989 . At the Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990 he finished only 6th. At the African Championships in Cairo , he won the 800-meter run . At the World Indoor Championships in Seville in 1991 he was the first to cross the finish line, but was disqualified because he left his career too early.

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , he won the 800 meter gold medal in front of Nixon Kiprotich (silver), also from Kenya, and the American Johnny Gray (bronze). At the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart , he was unable to confirm his form and was only seventh.

In the following years he concentrated more on the 1,500-meter run and was fifth in this discipline at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . At the World Indoor Championships he was third in 1997 in Paris and fourth in Maebashi over 1500 meters .
