Joaquim Carvalho Cruz (born March 12, 1963 in Taguatinga , Federal District ) is a former Brazilian middle-distance runner . His greatest achievement was winning the 800-meter run at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles .

Career

Cruz was one of the world's top 800-meter runners in the 1980s . With his victory at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles against his great competitor Sebastian Coe , he is the only Brazilian Olympic champion in athletics to date, alongside the triple jumper Adhemar Ferreira da Silva , who won gold in 1952 and 1956 .

At the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 Joaquim Cruz won bronze behind the German Willi Wülbeck and Rob Druppers from the Netherlands. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , Cruz won the silver medal over 800 meters behind Paul Ereng from Kenya, but had to interrupt his career for several years a little later due to Achilles tendon complaints . At the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg , he started in the 1500 meter run , but was eliminated in the preliminary run.

Joaquim Cruz is 1.88 m tall and weighed 77 kg at competition times. Today he works as a track and field trainer in California ( USA ).
