Ralph Doubell

Ralph Douglas Doubell (born February 11, 1945 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian middle-distance runner and Olympic champion .

Doubell actually only had a short international sporting career, but he was in the right place at the right time - at the Olympic Games - well prepared and in top form. He graduated from the University of Melbourne , where he was coached by the Austrian Franz Stampfl . Doubell's first major international success was winning the 800-meter run at the World Student Games in Tokyo in 1967 with a time of 1: 46.7 minutes.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Doubell won the gold medal over 800 meters, setting the existing world record of 1: 44.3 minutes, ahead of the Kenyan Wilson Kiprugut (silver) and the American Tom Farrell (bronze). Doubell was also qualified for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, but had to cancel his participation due to various injuries.

After retiring from active sport, he worked a. a. as director of the international division of Deutsche Bank in Australia. Until 2007 he was the Administrative Director of Telstra Stadium in Sydney .
