Albert George Hill (born March 24, 1889 in Southwark , London , † January 8, 1969 in London (Ontario) , Canada ) was a British athlete and Olympic champion .
Career
Hill began his athletic career as a long-distance runner. In 1910 he won the British AAA championship over 4 miles. The beginning career was stopped in 1914 by the outbreak of the First World War , as with most athletes of that time. After the war, he continued his athletic career, but now as a middle-distance runner, winning gold over 880 yards and over a mile at the AAA Championships in 1919 . Despite his victories, he was not accepted into the Olympic team because the committee responsible for it considered him too old at 31 years of age. It was not until 1920 that it was decided that he could take part in the Olympics.
At the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, he won the gold medal in the 800-meter run , ahead of the American Earl Eby and the South African Bevil Rudd , and the gold medal in the 1,500-meter run ahead of the British and later 1959 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Philip Noel -Baker and the American Lawrence Shields . He received a silver medal for 2nd place in the 3,000-meter team run, along with teammates Joe Blewitt and William Seagrove ; the British team placed itself between the teams from the USA and Sweden .
After Hill had won again at the AAA championships over a mile in 1921, he ended his active sports career and became a coach himself. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II , he emigrated to Canada, where he died in 1969.
