Lawrence Shields ( Marion Lawrence "Larry" Shields ; born March 5, 1895 in West Chester , Pennsylvania , † February 19, 1976 in Rochester , Minnesota) was an American middle-distance runner who was successful in the 1920s.

Career

He was 1.70 m tall, weighed 66 kg and started for the Meadowbrook Club.

After finishing his active career, he became a lecturer at the Phillips Academy in Andover (Massachusetts) .

Shields won three college championships over 1 mile as a student at Pennsylvania State University :

At the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 he started over 1500 m and in the team run over 3000 m . Over 1500 m he qualified as third in an estimated 4: 07.4 min (only the winner's time was stopped) for the final, in which he won the bronze medal behind the two Britons Albert Hill (4: 01.8 min) and the Philip Noel-Baker, who was three meters behind (estimated 4: 02.3 min), won. In the team run over 3000 m, the US team, which in addition to Shields also included Horace Brown , Michael Devaney , Ivan Dresser and Arlie Schardt , only finished second in the preliminary run, but won the final by a large margin. Shields as eighth-placed and fourth-best American remained without a medal, as only the three best runners per team were included in the ranking.
