Train

The Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Napoli (Italian, urban railway traffic Naples ) is a suburban railway system that is operated by Trenitalia analogous to German S-Bahn systems around the southern Italian city of Naples .

history

Roadmap from 1938

With the construction of the Roma-Formia-Napoli railway line, a railway tunnel was built under the city of Naples . Four tunnel stations and other light rail stations were built on this line, which went into operation in 1925, introducing urban rail transport (from Naples to Villa Literno ).

The system was called Metropolitana ("U-Bahn") and in fascist propaganda was supposed to remind of the underground systems of foreign cities (Italy only had a pure underground in 1955, in Rome ). However, the city trains ran irregularly because the route was also used by numerous express trains.

Until 1935, the line was electrified with a conductor rail. After that, the 3 kV overhead line common in Italy was introduced.

Today the city trains also reach regional destinations ( Caserta , Castellammare di Stabia and Salerno ). The branches to Capua and Formia could only be reached by regional trains.

network

There are four lines that are not numbered or otherwise labeled:

The Pozzuoli Solfatara - Napoli San Giovanni-Barra section, on which the urban line runs, is known as Linea 2 ("Line 2") of the urban metro .

All of these trains are classified as Metropolitano (M) , including some that have only a few stops.

vehicles

When the line opened in 1925, electric railcars of the E.20 series from the Ferrovie Varesine were parked.

In 1935 the line was also electrified with overhead lines, the conductor rail was dismantled around 1938; the E.20 were shut down and replaced by the newer E.624 .

1962–63 came the electric multiple units of the ALe 803 series and from 1983 the ALe 724 , which are still in use today.

Other systems

Around Naples , the private Ferrovia Circumvesuviana , Ferrovia Circumflegrea and Ferrovia Cumana also offer operations comparable to the German S-Bahn .
