The ALe 724 are a series of electric multiple units of the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), which were designed for local transport at the end of the 1970s .
history
The ALe 724 were developed on the basis of the prototypes of the ALe 644/804 series (so-called GAI trains ) and delivered from 1982 to 1984. Compared to the older multiple units ALe 803 and ALe 801/940 , the ALe 724 have a lower service weight and, thanks to the electronic equipment, better acceleration.
Following the example of the ALe 724, the ALe 582 and ALe 642 series were developed in the 1980s and 1990s .
Train compositions
Together with the 90 railcars, 120 intermediate cars (Le 884) and 30 control cars (Le 724) were built, which enables flexible train compositions.
Two typical train compositions were formed:
- Tw + Mw + Mw + Tw (30 moves)
- Tw + Mw + Mw + Sw (30 moves)
The compositions with two railcars were based in Turin (for suburban traffic) and in Naples (for the so-called "Metropolitana" ) because of the better acceleration . The compositions with only one railcar were based in Milan for the express trains on the Valtellina Railway .
Painting
Originally the ALe 724 was painted in "reversible train painting " (" livrea navetta "), beige with orange and purple stripes. At the end of the 1990s, they received the XMPR paintwork customary for the FS .
variants
At the same time as the ALe 724, the E.750 railcars were developed for Ferrovie Nord Milano .
