The trains of the series ALe 803 of the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato are three-part electric multiple units that were designed for local traffic at the end of the 1950s .

The railcars are numbered as ALe 803 , the control cars as Le 803.000 and the intermediate cars as Le 803.100 . A train usually consists of three cars:

  1. Railcar with driver's cab ALe 803.001-053
  2. Intermediate car without driver's cab Le 803.101–161
  3. Control car with driver's cab Le 803.001-053

8 of the total of 53 trains were in four parts and were formed with two intermediate cars.

Each car has three doors that separate two seating compartments, each with 40 2nd class seats. A fast passenger ascent was limited because of the floor height (the platform height was then - and is often still today - only 250 mm from the top of the rail ).

history

At the end of the 1950s, newer vehicles were needed in Italy due to increasing local and commuter traffic. The Ferrovie dello Stato therefore developed a new type of vehicle based on the existing high-speed railcars of the ALe 601 series .

The first series was delivered in 1961/62 and consisted of 20 three-part trains; they were based in Rome and used on the suburban lines. In 1962/63 a second series of 15 more trains came, which were equipped with Scharfenberg couplings and were used on the so-called “Metropolitana” in Naples . Later some trains came to Genoa . In 1972/73 the third series of a total of 18 trains (8 of which were four-part trains) was built. From 1973 the further development of the ALe 801 series was built.

From the mid-1980s, the Neapolitan railcars were gradually replaced by the newer ALe 724 and relocated to Bologna , Trieste and Lombardy . In 2009 only 15 trains were still in use, 9 of them in Lecco and 6 in Reggio Calabria .

Painting

Originally the ALe 803 was painted in sand yellow (“ Giallo sabbia ”) and Bordeaux red (“ Rosso Bordeaux ”) analogous to the TEE trains . At the end of the 1990s, they received the XMPR paintwork customary for the FS .
