The trains of the series ALe 801 and ALe 940 of the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato are four-part electric multiple units that were designed for local transport in the 1970s . They are considered a development of the older ALe 803 .

Train composition

A train usually consists of four cars:

  1. Railcar of the series ALe 801
  2. Intermediate car of the Le 108 series
  3. Intermediate car of the Le 108 series
  4. Railcar of the ALe 940 series

The ALe 801 and the ALe 940 are structurally identical. The ALe 801 have 80 seats with a luggage compartment, the ALe 940 have 94 seats without a luggage compartment. The Le 108 have 108 seats.

history

After the ALe 803 series multiple units had been built , Ferrovie dello Stato ordered a new series based on the same mechanics and with more modern electrical equipment.

September 1973 the first 25 four-car trains were ordered, which were delivered from 1975 to 1977. In May 1975 the order was placed for a second batch of 40 trains that were equipped with Scharfenberg couplings and which came into operation from 1976 to 1979.

The ALe 801 and ALe 940 were used for suburban traffic in the larger rail nodes of Genoa , Milan , Rome , Turin and Venice . They were still in use as planned until 2016.

Painting

Originally the ALe 801 and ALe 940 were painted in orange and Colorado yellow (" Giallo Colorado "). At the end of the 1990s, they received the XMPR paintwork customary for the FS .
