The Italian railway company Trenitalia describes a type of train in local traffic as treno metropolitano (for example metropolitan train , abbreviation M ) .

The train type was introduced with the timetable change on May 23, 1993 for the trains of the so-called "metropolitana FS" from Naples .

In 2004, Trenitalia planned to discontinue the train type and to replace it with the treno suburbano . However, the planning was not continued.

From 2009 to 2012 the train type was also used for the Cagliari S-Bahn .
