Earl Eby
Earl Eby ( Earl William Eby ; born November 18, 1894 in Aurora , Illinois , † December 14, 1970 in Valley Forge , Pennsylvania ) was an American middle-distance runner and sprinter .
During World War I he served in the United States Army and rose to the rank of sub-lieutenant . At the Inter-Allied Games in 1919 he won over 400 meters and came second over 800 meters .
In 1920 he qualified as US champion over 880 yards for the Olympic Games in Antwerp , where he won the silver medal over 800 meters in 1: 53.7 minutes behind Briton Albert Hill (1: 53.4 minutes) and in front of the South African Bevil Rudd (1: 53.7 min) won.
In 1917, 1920 and 1923 he was US indoor champion over 600 yards and in 1921, starting for the University of Pennsylvania , NCAA champion over 880 yards.
After his active career, he became a sports journalist.
