Asbel Kiprop (also: Asbel Kipruto Kiprop ; born June 30, 1989 in Kaptinga near Eldoret ) is a Kenyan middle and long distance runner .

Life

Discovered in 2006 by Martin Keino, the son of the famous Kipchoge Keino , he trained at the Kip Keino High Performance Training Center in Eldoret. Although he is actually a track runner, he was persuaded by his trainer Jimmy Beauttah to take part in cross-country races and surprisingly won the junior race (8 km) at the 2007 World Cross Country Championships .

In the summer he won the 1,500-meter run of the 2007 African Games , and at the World Championships in Osaka , he finished fourth over the same distance. In 2008 he won bronze over 800 meters at the African Championships and was fourth over 1500 meters.

He celebrated his greatest success so far at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , when he became Olympic champion in the 1,500 meter run. Although he crossed the finish line behind Bahraini Rashid Ramzi , Ramzi was tested positive for the EPO derivative Mircera in a follow-up check in April 2009 and in November 2009 Kiprop was subsequently awarded the gold medal.

At the world championships in Berlin , he finished fourth in the 1,500 meter run. In the 800-meter run, he was eliminated in the semifinals. At the 2010 African Championships in Nairobi , he won over 1500 meters. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , he won the gold medal in front of his compatriot Silas Kiplagat and the American Matthew Centrowitz in a time of 3: 35.69 minutes.

In London , he wanted to repeat his 2008 success at the 2012 Olympics . However, Kiprop had no chance in the final and only finished last. At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow , he successfully defended his 2011 title in a time of 3: 36.28 minutes.

At the 2014 African Championships in Marrakech , he won the silver medal in the 1500 meter run. In 2015 he became world champion on his parade route for the third time in Beijing . At the 2016 Olympic Games, however, he missed a medal in sixth place.

On October 27, 2017, Kiprop tested positive for EPO during a doping control and was suspended. In a public statement, Kiprop protested his innocence and in return accused the inspectors of extorting and manipulating the urine sample. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), which is responsible for the prosecution of doping violations, admitted that Kiprop was inadmissibly informed one day in advance about the upcoming test. Nonetheless, the AIU saw no convincing evidence that would speak against the authenticity of the sample. Accordingly, Kiprop was sentenced in the first instance to a four-year ban until February 2022, but he can appeal the judgment.

Asbel Kiprop is 1.90 m tall and weighs 62 kg. His father David Kebenei was fourth over 1500 meters at the Africa Games in 1987.
