Race course
Date: August 1, 1992
The favorites for this race were the Polish world champion Wanda Panfil, the Russian Valentina Jegorowa, who started for the united team, Vice European Champion in 1990 , the two Japanese women Sachiko Yamashita, Vice World Champion in 1991, and Yūko Arimori, fourth in the World Championship, the German Katrin Dörre-Heinig, Olympic third in 1988 and World Cup third in 1991, as well as the Australian Olympic third in 1988 Lisa Ondieki. Of the top marathon runners who did not start a. the Portuguese Olympic champion from 1988 and European champion in 1990 Rosa Mota , the German Uta Pippig , 1990 winner of the Berlin Marathon , and the Briton Liz McColgan .
After five kilometers an eighteen-strong group of leaders had formed, which could run out a lead of almost fifteen seconds. In it were Panfil, Dörre, Arimori, Ondieki, Yamashita and the Portuguese Manuela Machado. Dörre, Ondieki and Machado took turns in the lead and were also ahead at ten kilometers.
After twenty kilometers, Ondieki had sole lead. However, an eight-man chasing field was only a few seconds behind. But Ondieki slacked off significantly and had to give up the lead. She got slower and slower and later gave up the race entirely. Egorova took the lead, who now increased the pace. Her Russian teammate Madina Biktagirowa, here a member of the united team, followed her a few seconds behind. Yegorova kept going unabated and at thirty kilometers was almost a minute ahead of Biktagirova. They were followed by Arimori, Lorraine Moller from New Zealand, Yamashita and Dörre.
From kilometer 35, Egorova slowed down, Arimori initially came within ten seconds. Moller passed Biktagirowa, who was almost half a minute behind Moller. Arimori kept closing in on Egorova and came within a second at forty kilometers. Moller followed, one minute behind, Biktagirowa more than a minute behind. Yamashita had meanwhile been able to distance himself a little from Dörre. On the last section, Egorova increased her distance to the Japanese again. With a lead of only eight seconds, Valentina Jegorowa finally won the gold medal from Yūko Arimori. Seventy seconds behind followed Lorraine Moller and won the bronze medal. Biktagirowa, initially fourth, was one and a half minutes behind. However, this placement was revoked after a positive doping test. Sachiko Yamashita was officially fourth and was 22 seconds ahead of Katrin Dörre in fifth. North Korean Mun Gyong-ae was sixth.
A doping test convicted Madina Biktagirova of the prohibited use of norephedrine . She was subsequently disqualified and banned for three months.
