Montgat is a Catalan city in the province of Barcelona in northeastern Spain . It is located in the Comarca Maresme and belongs to the metropolitan area Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona .

location

The district of Montgat is located in the extreme southwest of the comarca on the Mediterranean . It borders in the north on Tiana , whose suburb was Montgat until 1936, in the east on Alella and El Masnou and in the west on Badalona .

A chain of hills with the Turó de Montgat (64 m) as a prominent protrusion into the coastline forms the border to the plain of Barcelona in the west . Today this characteristic hill is disfigured by the railway tunnel, the first to be built on the Iberian Peninsula in 1848, by the road and by limestone mining. In the south, the motorway from Barcelona to Mataró crosses the district.

history

The place is documented from 991 ("Monte Chatoi", "Monte Cato"), Montgat Castle 1006 through a donation to the Sant Cugat monastery . The monastery remained lord of the castle and place until the 13th century. Because of its strategic location on the Turó de Montgat , the city of Barcelona acquired the castle in the following century and used it as a lookout and signal tower.

The lime kilns of Montgat were mentioned in early reports and there is much to suggest that lime from nearby Montgat was used for the mortar for the city walls of Barcelona.

Culture and sights

The core of today's town of Montgat emerged from a fishermen's settlement at the foot of the hill of the same name, under the still-preserved Ca n'Alzina defense tower from the 16th or 17th century.

Of the numerous festivals in Montgat, the Festa Majors are on Sant Jordi (April 23rd) and especially Sant Joan (June 24th), the town's patron saint. Also in June, Sant Pere (June 29th) is celebrated. Finally, on the night of July 11th, the Cara al Mar fishing festival ("View of the Sea") takes place with a procession on the beach followed by large fireworks.

Economy and Transport

With increasing industrialization and because of the proximity to Barcelona, the population rose steadily from 2,400 in the year of self-employment (1936) to almost 10,000 today. The main branches of industry are ceramics, chemistry and mechanical engineering, with medium-sized companies predominating.

Montgat is accessed via the N-II national road from Barcelona to la Jonquera on the French border and via the railway line from Barcelona to Mataró .
