Stronghold of the Catalan independence aspirations

Arenys de Munt is considered to be the stronghold of Catalan independence efforts: On September 13, 2009, the local government, instigated by the left-alternative CUP , held a non-binding referendum on the question of Catalonia's independence for the first time. With a turnout of 41%, 96% of voters voted for independence within the EU. This marked the beginning of a series of similar referendums in different Catalan municipalities. 3 years later, on September 13, 2013, the municipality declared itself "free and sovereign territory of Catalonia".
