The Protector UPS is an unmanned, remote-controlled and armed rigid inflatable boat . It was created in Israel by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. developed.

design

While unmanned aircraft are already widespread in the military sector and unmanned underwater vehicles are already taking on a wide variety of tasks in the field of mine clearance and offshore oil and gas extraction , the spectrum of unmanned surface vehicles is still small. After the terrorist attack on the USS Cole , a destroyer of the United States Navy , on October 12, 2000, most of the world's navies recognized a need for new weapon systems that should be able to effectively repel such attacks in the future. As a result, the Israeli arms company Rafael developed the unmanned Protector weapon system.

technology

The basis for the Protector UPS is a rigid inflatable boat. In order to achieve maximum speed and maneuverability, jet pumps are used instead of conventional propellers, which in turn are powered by a diesel engine. The fuel carried is sufficient for up to eight hours of use.

There is only one tower-like structure. This is designed as small as possible and specially coated in order to achieve the smallest possible radar reflection surface. Two men are required to remotely control the Protector UPS, who can either be on land or on a manned ship.

The equipment includes daylight cameras, infrared for operations at night or poor visibility, a laser rangefinder, an inertial navigation system , GPS and radar. In addition, a loudspeaker system is scaffolded.

The armament consists of a machine gun , which is installed in a fully stabilized weapon station of the Mini-Typhoon type . However, the integration of further weapons is also planned for the future.

commitment

So far, the Protector UPS have only been used by the Singapore Navy. However, Rafael is now working with Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems to market the system in the United States.
