Unmanned underwater vehicles

Seahorse class UUV (AUV)

Unmanned underwater vehicles or UUVs ( unmanned underwater vehicles ) are robots that work in water and are divided into these two groups:

but to which this group also belongs in a broader sense:

  • Underwater robots that have no drive of their own to move and are therefore not underwater vehicles.

The term " submarine " is not common for unmanned underwater vehicles as it stands for manned underwater vehicles.

The importance of UUVs is increasing, also in the civil sector. Intensive research is being carried out, particularly in the field of autonomous underwater vehicles.

Areas of application are, for example:

  • Inspection of underwater structures (dams, locks, pipelines, etc.)
  • Inspection of ship hulls (rust, damage, contraband etc.)
  • Surveying and studying the seabed
  • Support for divers in poor visibility and lengthy assignments
  • Use in places that are harmful to health
  • Mine search and clearance
