The Barcelona-França – Maçanet-Massanes railway is a partially double-track and fully electrified railway line operated by Adif in Catalonia and an important local transport axis for the Rodalies Barcelona . The trains are all operated by Renfe . It is the link between Barcelona and the Costa Brava .

history

The first stage between Barcelona and Mataró was inaugurated in 1848 at the instigation of Miguel Biada as the first railway line on the Iberian Peninsula. The rail tunnel between the Montgat and Montgat Nord stations is therefore also the first rail tunnel in Spain. Since it was not allowed in Barcelona to build the terminus in the city center, the França station was built outside the city walls of that time . Its name indicates the planned expansion to France . The Companyia dels Camins de Ferro de Barcelona a Mataró , founded for this purpose, was forced to merge with the competing Companyia dels Camins de Ferro de Barcelona a Granollers to form the Camins de Ferro de Barcelona a Girona because of the exploding construction costs . Both companies had planned to build railway lines between Barcelona and Girona , one along the sea via Mataró, the other inland via Granollers . Both lines met at the Maçanet - Massanes station .

In 1970, with the opening of the Sants train station in Barcelona, the new line between L'Hospitalet and El Clot-Aragó with the two parallel city tunnels, which branched off the previous line in Sant Adrià de Besòs, was inaugurated . Since the França train station was also connected to the tunnels, the importance of the overground route via Poblenou decreased . In preparation for the 1992 Summer Olympics , Barcelona decided to open up to the sea. For example, a highway on the seashore had to disappear underground, and the railway line between Sant Adrià de Besos and França, including the Bogatell and Poblenou stations , was shut down and broken off. The Olympic Village is located on the site of the former railway line. At the same time, the entire route was renovated: the towns along the Costa Brava such as Calella achieved a reduction in noise pollution with the renovation.

course

After Sants, the two city tunnels leading eastwards are used, which unite to form a tunnel at El Clot-Aragó station. At the tunnel exit, the new Sagrera station will open in 2007. A little later, Sant Adrià de Besos follows, where the junction with the old route was. From here to Malgrat de Mar , the route runs along the sea and forms a kind of separation between the settlements and the beach. The NII national road also runs parallel to the railway line between Montgat and Matarò. After Malgrat de Mar, it swings inland to connect to the main line to Portbou in Maçanet-Massanes .

traffic

In the past, even long-distance and freight trains ran on the route, but since the late 1980s they have only been used during construction work or route interruptions on the continuously double-lane main line to Port-Bou via Granollers. From January 7, 2014 to April 2015, the Estrella Costa Brava ran once a week from Figueres to Madrid Chamartín with stops in Mataró , Arenys de Mar, Calella and Blanes. According to the timetable, only the R1 line of Rodalies Barcelona operates between Molins de Rei and Maçanet Massanes on the route. Most of the trains, however, already turn in Mataró , Calella and Blanes . In Barcelona they only use the more southern of the two tunnels, which is reserved for S-Bahn traffic, and thus also stop at the Arc de Triomf and Plaça Catalunya stations . The northern tunnel is used by RENFE regional express trains and the Rodalies lines R2 and R2 Nord, which branch off to El Clot on the main line. The route is popular with fishermen and tourists because of the proximity of most stations to the sea. Since March 24, 2014, additional regional trains have been running every two hours between L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Figueres / Portbou via Mataró and Girona , which are integrated into the R1 cycle between L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Maçanet-Massanes. They run under the name RG1 of the newly introduced brand of Rodalies Girona .

expansion

The line between Barcelona and Arenys de Mar is double-lane, the rest of the section is single-lane, with crossroads in the stations except in Santa Susanna. Continuous electrification is available with 3000 volts direct current, the maximum permissible speed on the double lane is 160 km / h, on the single-lane section it is 130 km / h.

future

  • In 2016, the new Sagrera high-speed train station , designed by Frank Gehry , will go into operation in eastern Barcelona. Construction work began in 2007. In addition to the platforms on the high-speed line to Figueres and a subway station of the Barcelona Metro, this station will also include platforms on the line to Mataró and will be served by the R1 and R2 lines of the Rodalies.
  • Some of the efforts are being made to move the building underground to enable barrier-free access to the coastal villages. In Calella, for example, there are just two underpasses along the entire length of the embankment.
  • From 2016, a new Rodalies ring line will go into operation between Mataró and Vilanova, which will bypass the metropolis of Barcelona on a large scale and will also cross the main line in Granollers. For this purpose, a new Mataró Oest junction will be created west of today's train station in Mataró between the current railway line and the new ring line.
  • In the medium to long term, a branch line from Blanes via Lloret de Mar to Tossa de Mar is planned, which would also entail a reorganization of the local transport network. All trains on the R1 line, which lead to Maçanet-Massanes, would be integrated into the RG1 line, which would thus be compressed to the hourly service. The R1 trains ending today in Blanes would then be extended to Tossa de Mar.
