The Cremallera de Núria ( German : rack railway of Núria ) is located in Catalonia ( Spain ) and takes 40 minutes from the 905 m high Ribes de Freser via Queralbs to the Vall de Núria ( Pyrenees ) at 1967 m . It was inaugurated in 1931 and has been operated by the Catalan railway company Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) since 1984 .

location

The Vall de Núria is a popular destination for the Catalans and can only be reached by land on foot via the historical pilgrim path (Camí vell de Núria) or with the Cremallera de Núria. The cog railway has in Ribes de Freser connection to the regional trains of the Spanish National Railways Renfe coming from Barcelona and is thus about 2 hours from the Catalan capital from distance.

In November 2008, the 1330 m long, double-lane Roc del Dui tunnel was opened in the upper part, which ensures winter safety in the altitude range between 1450 m and 1649 m.

The rack railway was and is largely operated with vehicles of Swiss and German origin, the double multiple units from 1986 and 1995 were built in Spain, but according to Swiss plans. The latest vehicles were manufactured in Switzerland again and are identical or interchangeable with the vehicles used on the Montserrat rack railway ( Cremallera de Montserrat ) (see vehicle list). The Núria vehicles are blue, the Montserrat vehicles are green.

history

1917 For the first time there was talk of the need for a road or a lift to Núria.
1924 The company Ferrocarrils de Muntanya de Grans Pendents (FMGP) planned the construction project for the rack railway.
1926 The building project was approved by royal decree.
1927 FMGP was converted into a board member of Ferrocarril de Núria by royal decree.
1928 Construction began on May 24th.
1930 First test run on December 30th with a steam locomotive from the Montserrat rack railway .
1931 Opening of the railway line on March 22nd.
1935 Inauguration of the Ribes-Enllaç station building .
1936 Business interruption until 1939 due to the civil war.
1953 Construction of the Núria station.
1982 The railway was damaged by severe flooding, and the Catalan government then took part in the board of directors of the rack railway.
1984 The rack railway was integrated into the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) network on February 2nd . Renovation work has started.
2005 Construction work began on the 1330 m long Roc del Dui tunnel.
2008 Opening of the Roc del Dui tunnel with the start of the winter season on November 27th.

**) The original stock of wagons, built by the Vereinigte Westdeutsche Waggonfabrik AG, Cologne Deutz plant, is named Affw 2 (manufacture no. 150.535), ABffw 11-15 (manufacture no. 28 (serial no. 150.522–150.529) and Aaffw 51 (serial no. 151.522). The sliding wall wagon 01 was developed from the Affw 1, and there was also a Bffw 29; but the ABffw 13-15 and Bffw 26 were no longer in the inventory. A Bffw 30 is also proven. After a renovation campaign around 1942, there were 1 As 51 with 18 places, 2 A 1–2 with 36 places, 2 AB 11–12 with 42 places and 10 B 21–30 with 48 places
