history
In the area around Queralbs there are numerous caves in which Stone Age finds were made that prove an early settlement of the area.
The first written mention of the place Cairosalbos can be found in a document for the consecration of the cathedral of La Seu d'Urgell from the year 839. The Romanesque church of Sant Jaume dates from the 10th century . Until the 12th century, the area's pastures belonged to the monasteries of Sant Joan de les Abadesses and Santa Maria de Ripoll . In 1273 the Catalan crown then leased the land directly to the residents of Queralbs and Fustanyà.
In the 13th and 14th centuries, the place belonged to the rule of various feudal lords : from 1280 Pere de Montclar, from 1339 Ramon de Ribes and from 1383 Pere Galceran de Pinós.
On February 2, 1428 Queralbs was badly damaged by an earthquake in which many of its residents were killed.
economy
In addition to traditional cattle breeding and the operation of hydropower plants , which began in 1903, tourism is the town's main source of income, especially since 1931 the Cremallera de Núria rack railway on the route from Ribes de Freser to the Núria valley in Queralbs. The former president of the Catalan government (1980–2003) Jordi Pujol (* 1930) is one of the well-known - always returning - guests of the place .
