La Seu d'Urgell [ lə ˈsɛw ðuɾˈʒeʎ ] is a city in northern Catalonia . The city in the Pyrenees is close to the mountainous state of Andorra . It is the capital of the Catalan comarca Alt Urgell in the province of Lleida . The city is 691 m above sea level, is 15.44 square kilometers and has a population of 12,089 (January 1, 2019). The Segre flows through the city . The Valira, which comes from Andorra, flows into it within the urban area .

history

The city was founded in 195 BC. Founded by the Romans as Orgellia . Little is known about the Christianization of the region, but there was already a bishop in 527 . In the Middle Ages , La Seu d'Urgell was the capital of the historic county of Urgell . The addition of the name Seu means bishopric in Catalan . In the Middle Ages, the diocese of Urgell was one of the starting points of the Christian belief system of adoptianism, represented by its bishop Felix von Urgell . This led to a documentary mention of La Seu d'Urgell in the capital of the Synod of Frankfurt in 794 under Charlemagne .

The bishop of the Urgell diocese is still one of the two co-princes ( ~ head of state ) of the neighboring state of Andorra, along with the President of France .

In 1992, in La Seu d'Urgell in the context of the Olympic Games of Barcelona , the canoeing competitions in slalom held.

The city is the seat of the Catholic religious order Germanes de la Sagrada Família d'Urgell (Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Urgell).

Economy and Transport

La Seu d'Urgell is conveniently located at the intersection of the N-260 national road (so-called Eix Pirinenc), which runs south along the main ridge of the Pyrenees , and the N-145 national road, which runs south from Andorra, which joins the C-14 ( Andorra - Tarragona ) transforms.

There is no connection to the rail network.

The Andorra Airport - La Seu d'Urgell was reopened in 2011 and in view of the tourist development of the Pyrenees also by air traffic u. a. expanded and modernized with funds from Andorra. Since July 2015, the airport has been used as the Aeroport Andorra - La Seu d'Urgell by various airlines, including a. used for Swiftair charter flights .
