In the middle of the 19th century, the formerly independent villages had a total of around 2,500 inhabitants. The mechanization of agriculture has led to a constant decline in the population since then. Some villages have fewer than 20 inhabitants, so their end is in sight.
economy
In the past, the inhabitants lived mainly as self-sufficient farmers from dairy farming and cheese-making ; the cultivation of grain (mostly barley ) only brought low yields. In the meantime, many empty houses have been converted into holiday apartments ( cases rurals ).
history
The first mention of Noves comes from the year 839; Documentary mentions of the other places can be found in the following centuries. In the Middle Ages, large parts of today's municipality belonged to the manorial power of the Vice Counts of Castelbon . The municipality was created in 1972 through the merger of initially only five villages ( La Guàrdia d'Ares , Noves de Segre , Taús and Castellàs ). In the course of time the other villages were added.
