Vice-county of Castelbon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The vice-county of Castelbon was first mentioned at the end of the 10th century. It was located in the valley of Castelbon (in Catalan Castellbò) south of Andorra .

In 989, Guillermo, Vice Count of Urgell and son of Vice Count Miró, received the Castelbon Valley from Count Borrell II of Barcelona . However, the title of Vice Count of Castelbon was first used by Guillermo's descendant Pere Ramón after the Vice Count of Urgell had become a pure title. Pere Ramón married Sibila von Cerdanya in 1126, thereby uniting his vice-counties with the vice-counties of Cerdanya - and thus becoming a competitor of the bishop of Urgell , who followed the vice- counts ' increase in power with suspicion.

Pere Ramón's grandson Arnau married Arnalda de Caboet around 1183, through which the valleys of Cabo, Sant-Juan and Andorra came to the vice counts of Castelbon. With him, the power of the Vice Counts of Castelbon reached its peak - also towards the bishop, especially since Arnau was a Cathar (which led to his body being exhumed and cremated 40 years after his death). Arnaud's only daughter Ermessende married the Hereditary Count of Foix, Roger Bernardo II. , † 1241 in 1208. The dynasty of the Vice Counts of Castelbon died out.

The descendants of Discretionary and Roger Bernardos ruled Castelbon for two centuries. As Count Gaston III. Fébus died in 1391 without legitimate descendants, he bequeathed his property to the King of France - which, however, now prompted the King of Aragon to appoint a relative of Gaston's, Mathieu de Foix , to prevent the vice-county from falling into possession of the French crown. Mathieu also died in 1398 without descendants, so that his only sister Isabelle († 1412) succeeded him. She was married to Archambaud de Grailly († 1413), from her the house Foix-Grailly comes from.

Her descendant Gaston IV. († 1472) was also Count of Foix and Bigorre, Vice Count of Béarn, Castelbon and Narbonne. His son François Fébus became King of Navarre , his descendant Henry King of France in 1589, which brought Castelbon back to the French crown. Because of this reversal, the French head of state is still one of the two heads of state of Andorra.
