John I (Aragon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John I called the hunter , in Catalan  Joan el Caçador , in Aragonese Chuan o Cazataire , in Spanish Juan el Cazador , (* December 27, 1350 in Perpignan , † May 19, 1396 in the forest near Foixà , Girona ) was from 1387 to King of Aragón in 1396 and Duke of Neopatria from 1387 to 1390 .

Life

Johann was the eldest son of King Peter IV of Aragon from his third marriage to Eleanor of Sicily , daughter of King Peter II. As crown prince he held the title of Duke of Girona , he broke with his father because of his fourth wife and her coronation as queen. He followed as King of Aragon in 1387.

After taking office, Johann sided with the antipope Clement VII , after his father had not taken a position in the occidental schism . His second marriage to the niece of the French King Charles V had a major impact on this decision .

He ended his father's wars with Castile, France, Genoa and Naples, but had to fight back uprisings in Sicily and Sardinia, the latter he lost entirely to Eleonora di Arborea .

The king cracked down on anti-Semitic unrest in his country and created the fourth class of the lower nobility in the Cortes of Catalonia, which however remained without influence. Johann was considered passive and occupied himself almost exclusively with the hunt. He left the government largely to his second wife. He died while hunting in 1396 after falling from a horse with no surviving sons. His brother Martin became his successor .
