France Artois House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The House of France-Artois was a branch line of the Capetians , descended from Robert I , a son of King Louis VIII of France and brother of King Louis IX. to whom he gave the county of Artois in 1226 .

Artois was already lost in the fourth generation, however, because it was claimed within the family that the only heir ( Robert III ) was extramarital due to an incorrect marriage and therefore not entitled to inheritance. After a long legal battle, the county fell to his aunt Mathilde and through her to the Count Palatine of Burgundy .

The son of the alleged illegitimate heir, tellingly called Johann Ohneland (Jean Sans Terre), was "compensated" in 1352 with the county of Eu . In 1472 the branch line died out with a grandson of this Count Johann in the male line. The county of Eu fell briefly to the younger house of Burgundy and then to the Counts of the Mark from the house of the Ezzone .
