The Montceaux Castle in the 17th century

The ruins of the Montceaux Castle , also known as Château des Reines , are in the commune of Montceaux-lès-Meaux in the Seine-et-Marne department . The castle was acquired in the 16th century by the French Queen and Queen Mother Caterina de 'Medici , who had it rebuilt in the Renaissance style according to her needs . She commissioned the architect Philibert Delorme with the work, craftsmen and artists such as Jacques I. Androuet du Cerceau , Francesco Primaticcio were active there. Salomon de Brosse did not work on the palace until 1601, i.e. after the most important renovations were completed.

King Henry IV acquired the property and gave it to his mistress Gabrielle d'Estrées , who then bore the title of Marquise de Monteceaux from 1594. The next owner was on the occasion of the birth of Louis XIII. Henry's wife Maria de 'Medici .

The castle was destroyed during the French Revolution . Today only ruins remain of the buildings, for example a chapel , the buildings in the forecourt, which were redesigned as town houses, and the eastern part of the castle, which became part of a farm. The castle park called "Parc du Château de Montceaux" was also preserved.
