House France-Évreux

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The France-Évreux house was a branch of the Capetian family , hence the French name Maison capétienne d'Évreux-Navarre . It comes from Louis of France (* 1276, † 1319), a younger brother of King Philip IV (* 1268, † 1314), to whom the latter handed over the county of Évreux as an apanage in 1298 .

Ludwig's son Philipp (* 1301, † 1343) resigned as Philip III in 1328 after the death of his cousin Charles IV , King of France and King of Navarre . his successor in Navarre, although he was not a descendant of the Navarre kings - a grievance that the following year through his marriage to Joan II of Navarre (* 1312, † 1349), the rightful heiress, but who so far had been deprived of the kingdom was, was "healed".

The crown of Navarre came to Charles III via Charles II (King 1343–1387) . (King 1387–1425), who died without a male heir; his daughter and heiress Blanche of Navarre died in 1441 and with her the Évreux line.

After her death, her second husband, John of Aragón, retained rulership over Navarre until his death in 1479, before the couple's daughter, Eleanor , inherited the throne for a few weeks. Her own death then brought Navarre one after the other by succession to the Grailly family (1479–1517), the Albret family (1484–1572) and the Bourbons (from 1555) who, with Henry IV, shared the part of Navarre north of the Pyrenees (the part south of the Pyrenees was lost to Aragón in 1512) finally united with France.
