Château-Chinon (Ville) is a town in the department of Nièvre in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is considered one of the main towns in the Morvan region and has 1964 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It extends over an area of 4.28 km².
Peculiarity of the place name
The community of Château-Chinon, which existed until the French Revolution , was divided into two communities after the revolution: Château-Chinon Intra-Muros and Château-Chinon Extra-Muros, which later became Château-Chinon (Ville) and Château-Chinon (Campagne) renamed. The terms "(Ville)" or "(Campagne)" are therefore an official part of the place names.
Another peculiarity is that until 2008 there was officially (i.e. at the Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques ) no space between “Château-Chinon” and the explanatory suffix, i. H. the municipalities "Château-Chinon (Ville)" and "Château-Chinon (Campagne)" were called. However, this peculiarity was not respected in daily use and has been removed since 2009.
history
Château-Chinon looks back on a long history. A fortified castle of the Chinon knights existed by the 8th century at the latest . A massive city wall was built in the 12th and 13th centuries . As vassals of the Burgundian dukes, the Knights of Chinon had to deliver fabrics and honey products to the court of Dijon in the Middle Ages . Louis XIII had the walls razed at the beginning of the 17th century and gave one of his advisors the castle of Chinon, which was transformed into a baroque country residence in the 17th and 18th centuries. The place only regained importance in the 20th century, when the future French President François Mitterrand was mayor of Château-Chinon from 1959 to 1981 .

- The Institut Européen des Sciences Humaines (IESH) ( "European Institute of Humanities"), is a private, the Islamism related Islamic College for the training of imams in France, it is located near Saint-Leger-de Fougeret in Château-Chinon.
Town twinning
Since 1962, when François Mitterrand was mayor of the city, it has been twinned with Cortona in Tuscany ( Italy ). Further partnerships exist with Villeréal in the French region Nouvelle-Aquitaine and with Timbuktu in Mali .
