It belongs to the arrondissement of Château-Chinon (Ville) and the canton of Château-Chinon (until 2015 Châtillon-en-Bazois ).

Tamnay-en-Bazois is located about 55 kilometers east-northeast of Nevers in the foothills of the Morvan and on the Trait River . Tamnay-en-Bazois is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Ougny in the north, Chougny in the northeast, Maux in the east, Brinay in the south and Châtillon-en-Bazois in the west.
