Planchez is a French municipality with 301 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nièvre in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Planchez is located in the Morvan , a granite massif that geologically belongs to the Massif Central . The place itself is at an altitude of about 600 to 620 meters. It is mostly surrounded by wooded heights. About half of the community area consists of forest and the highest point reaches 729 meters in the southeast at La Chaise.

Planchez is about 22 kilometers southwest of Saulieu and 10 kilometers northeast of Château-Chinon .

Hamlet and surrounding area

In addition to the main town, Planchez includes some hamlets and small settlements.

Adjacent municipalities (starting clockwise from the north) are Montsauche-les-Settons , Ouroux-en-Morvan , Chaumard , Corancy , Lavault-de-Frétoy , Anost , Gien-sur-Cure and Moux-en-Morvan .

history

Street named after a victim

Planchez experienced its heyday in the 18th century, when numerous woodcutters settled in the village. Forestry still plays a major role today , around Planchez there are some tree nurseries where Christmas trees are grown.

During World War II, the residents were suspected of being resistance fighters , etc. a. Gérard Drouin, alias Captain Serge . Every year in August there is a memorial service for him and his fallen comrades at a memorial and at the cemetery. On June 24, 1944, French resistance fighters, led by maquis Bernard and supported by British SAS members , attacked a German Wehrmacht unit , which suffered heavy losses , near La Verrerie, a hamlet south of Montsauche-les-Settons . As part of the retaliatory action that followed, Planchez was also occupied by German units and burned down on June 25, 1944. François Thibault, after whom a street was named, was killed.

Planchez now has residents of 14 different nationalities. In addition to the French, Dutch, Spaniards, Belgians, Italians, Germans, Americans and Portuguese have settled here in recent years.
