It belongs to the arrondissement of Château-Chinon (Ville) and the canton of Château-Chinon (until 2015 Château-Chinon (Ville) ). The inhabitants are called Lavaultiens .

Lavault-de-Frétoy is about 65 kilometers east-northeast of Nevers . Lavault-de-Frétoy is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Planchez in the north, Anost in the east, Arleuf in the south and Corancy in the west.
