history
Excavations from 1877 brought to light mosaics, clay pots and Roman coins, from which the existence of a Roman villa was concluded.
According to legend, Angilbert, one of Charlemagne's followers , Abbot of Saint-Riquier , Count of Ponthieu , is the namesake of the place. In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the Counts of Nevers . In the castle, of which two towers still stand, the wedding of Duke Philip the Good and Bonne d'Artois, widow of Philip II of Nevers , was celebrated in 1424 . At the end of the 14th century, Moulins-Engilbert was surrounded by a city wall.
The administrative reform during the revolution made Moulins-Engilbert the seat of five cantons, a change in 1800 reduced the number to one.
