The Institut Européen des Sciences Humaines (IESH), the “European Institute for the Humanities”, is a private Islamic university for the training of imams in France, which is close to the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood . The IESH Center Bouteloin is located near Saint-Léger-de Fougeret near Château-Chinon , a commune in the French department of Nièvre .

Organization and teaching

The IESH was founded in 1990 by the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe (FIOE) together with the Union des Organizations Islamiques de France (UOIF) and opened in 1992. It is an association under the 1901 law . It offers three degree programs for which applicants do not have to have passed the Baccalauréat or Abitur :

  • Institute of the Arabic Language Two-year study of modern and Koranic Arabic.
  • Institute for Imam and Teacher Training After two years a qualification as “Imam and Murabbi” (prayer leader and educator) is possible.
  • European Faculty of Islamic Studies After three, originally four years, a degree in Sharia and Usul ud-Din can be obtained.

The IESH also offers distance learning courses, the exams can be taken in various European capitals. The face-to-face students are accommodated and cared for in the IESH.

The content of the IESH is determined by a scientific advisory board, chaired by Yusuf al-Qaradawi and Faisal Mawlawi, who are also President and Deputy President of the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR). The fatwa of the ECFR are used as a reference in the IESH. The IESH Château-Chinon director Zuhair Mahmood from Iraq co-founded the UOIF in 1983.

Since the private university is not accredited in France , the degree and student status obtained are not recognized by the state.

students

The first class in 1992 consisted of 12 students. As of 2000, the IESH has had more than 120 face-to-face students and 200 distance learning students. About five or six imams are trained each year, between 1992 and 2005 about three dozen imams. The study period is often four to eight years, also depending on previous knowledge of Arabic.

While the students were initially and up to now mostly French, in 2005-2006 half of the students are of other nationalities, 8% of them German and Austrian. The Millî Görüş had sent to 2002 already 40 students from Germany on a scholarship to IESH. The Muslim Youth in Germany (MJD) awarded in spring 2003 a scholarship to a four-year Sharia studies at IESH, "equip young Muslims in Germany with expertise in the field of Islamic sciences and educate to competent multipliers" to. The Islamic Community in Germany (IGD) also attaches great importance to training imams in Europe such as at the IESH, according to its chairman Ibrahim El-Zayat .

Former IESH students report difficulties in pursuing a relevant profession after graduation. Some stress the very different goals of IESH students, many of whom are primarily interested in learning Arabic, and tell of tensions due to differing religious views. In particular, however, many mention the unattractive career prospects as imams in France or Germany, where imams often live on a minimum wage or social welfare or only work as an imam on a voluntary basis in addition to their main job.

financing

The buildings and the 11 hectare site of the former holiday colony near Château-Chinon belong to the UOIF. Some students receive scholarships from the European Trust . In the 1990s, the running costs were largely borne by generous donations from the Arab Gulf States. However, since September 11, 2001, these abated and financial difficulties arose, which in 2003 forced the dismissal of some teachers. The tuition fees also rose from around € 2,000 a year in 2002 to € 2,600 in 2004 and € 2,800 in 2006. Since 2007, the IESH has also been offering children's camps and intensive courses in summer.

More locations

In addition to the IESH at Château-Chinon, two other locations have been founded in Europe that follow the same scientific advisory board and the same study plans:

  • The "IESH de Paris" , founded in 1999 and opened in 2001 in St. Denis near Paris, whose director Ahmed Jaballah is also a member of the ECFR and the UOIF. The IESH de Paris offers part-time study courses in the evening and on weekends.
  • The European Institute of Human Sciences (EIHS) in Llanybydder, West Wales, Great Britain was founded in 1997 and opened in 1999. It is headed by Director Kadhem al-Rawi, the brother of long-time FIOE Chairman Ahmad al-Rawi. The EISH has around 80 full-time students who pay up to £ 4,000 in tuition fees a year. In 2005 the University of Wales, Lampeter ended its collaboration with the EISH.

The Markfield Institute of Higher Education (MIHE) does not belong to the IESH. However, the MIHE offers graduates of the IESH a master’s program. The principal is Khurshid Ahmad , vice-president of the Islamist Pakistani party Jamaat-e-Islami and founder and chairman of the Islamic Foundation in Leicester, which also administers and controls the MIHE.
