The Musée du Septennat in the Burgundian city of Château-Chinon , housed in one of the castle's former farm buildings, houses a regional museum that explains the history, geography , flora and fauna and local customs in the region.

The most important part, however, is the permanent exhibition on the life and work of François Mitterrand , who was mayor of Château-Chinon from 1959 to 1981 and then French President. The word Septennat refers to the usual term of office of seven years at the time.

In addition to historical documents and photographs, Mitterrand's personal items, including books and writing utensils, as well as numerous gifts from state guests from all over the world are presented. These include valuable pieces from the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR , but also from the USSR , China , the USA , Australia , Syria and Senegal .
