Location of the County of Lerín

The county Lerín with the main town Lerín was 1424 by Charles III. , King of Navarre set up for his illegitimate son Luis de Beaumont .

The Count of Lerín carried the title of Condestable de Navarra , as the previous royal Alférez began to be called from around 1430 . His tasks were imprecise, in any case the chairmanship of the aristocratic faction in the Cortes de Navarra was one of them.

In 1379, King Charles II entrusted the task of Alférez del Reino to his nephew Carlos de Beaumont , who was followed in 1433 by his son Luis as Condestable. In the wars of the time he headed the party of the Prince of Viana (the Beaumonteses ). In 1464 he was followed by his son Luis as 2nd Count of Lerín, and in 1508 his son Luis as 3rd Count of Lerín, who was known for his support for Ferdinand II of Aragón in the conquest of the kingdom. He was restituted by him in 1513, including the title Condestable del Reino.

In 1565 the 4th Count of Lerín died without male heirs. The title of Count went to his daughter Brianda as the 5th Countess of Lerín, who married Diego Álvarez de Toledo († 1583) in 1564, the second son of Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba , who was named Condestable de Navarra by King Philip II in 1565 . When Diego's brother Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo, 4th Duke of Alba, died in 1585 , the title of duke passed to Diego's son, Antonio Álvarez de Toledo y Beaumont , who was now 6th Count of Lerín, 5th Duke of Alba and Condestable de Navarra.

In 1775 the Count of Lerín bore the titles: Conde de Lerín, Condestable y Canciller Mayor del Reino, Señor de las Villas de Larraga , Dicastillo , Allo , Arróniz , Mendavia , Sesma , Cárcar , Cirauqui , Arruazu , Sada , Eslava , Ochovi , Villamayor , Goldaraz , Castillo de Monjardín y Valle de Santesteban , Señor de diferentes Castillos y Pechas del Reino; in addition, the count is one of the grandees of Spain .

geography

The county consisted of the towns of Carcar, Sesma, Mendavia, Andosilla, Dicastillo and Allo. The last two are part of the Piedemonte de Montejurra , the rest of the Ribera Estellesa ; the county thus extended between Montejurra down to the Ebro .
