Alférez Mayor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alférez Mayor or Alférez Real was from the 11th to the 14th centuries the title of the royal standard-bearer in Castile , León and Navarre , who served as the kingdom's chief military commander. The Spanish word Alférez is derived from the Arabic al-Faris (standard bearer). The Spanish national hero El Cid († 1099) also held this position as the highest military leader in Castile before King Alfonso VI ascended the throne . (1072) temporarily paused. In 1382 the office of King John I was replaced by that of the Condestable ( Constable ).

Alférez is still a rank in the Spanish army today ; he corresponds to the German ensign or lieutenant .
