Count of Alburquerque and later Duke of Alburquerque are titles of the Spanish nobility that refer to the city of Alburquerque in the province of Badajoz .

history

The first count was Affonso Sanchez († 1329), "bastard of Portugal", as the illegitimate son of King Dionysius , who received the title of count in 1304 after he had married Teresa Martíns de Menezes († 1350), the 5th mistress of Albuquerque Heir daughter of Juan Alfonso de Menezes, Lord of Albuquerque. His son and grandson were victims of the Castilian King Peter I the Cruel .

A little later, Alburquerque was in the hands of Peter's half-brother Sancho Alfonso (1342-1374), an illegitimate son of King Alfonso XI. of Castile . His descendants carried the title of count until the middle of the 15th century; In 1476 they were named "Dukes of Segorbe".

The title of "Duke of Alburquerque" was finally awarded on November 26, 1464. The first title holder was Beltrán Fernández de la Cueva (1443-1492), who is considered the lover of Joan of Portugal , the wife of King Henry IV of Castile († 1474), known as "el impotente". The daughter from this marriage, Joanna of Castile (1462–1530) was known by her nickname la Beltraneja , as Henry IV could never make his fatherhood credible. Johanna was proclaimed queen in 1474, but was soon replaced by her aunt Isabella I "the Catholic" . Beltrán de la Cueva was removed from the court after Joan's birth and received the title of "Duke of Alburquerque" as compensation; he had the Castillo de Mombeltrán built from 1461 . Three years later the king enfeoffed him with the town and castle Cuéllar , which is still the family seat to this day.

Other well-known dukes are the 8th Duke of Alburquerque, the founder of the city of Albuquerque in the US state of New Mexico , and Beltrán Osorio y Díez de Rivera (1919-1994), Duke of Alburquerque, who tried as an amateur jockey from 1952, the Grand National Steeplechase until his license was revoked in 1976 for his own safety.

The Spanish title Duke of Alburquerque is to be distinguished from the Portuguese title Duke of Albuquerque , which has been held by the Costa de Sousa de Macedo family since it was awarded to João Afonso da Costa de Sousa de Macedo on May 19, 1886 .
