Pierre de Guibours (as a layperson) or Père Anselme de la Vierge Marie (as a monk) (* 1625 in Paris , † January 17, 1694 ibid) was a French historian , genealogist and heraldist .

Life

Pierre de Guibours entered the order of the barefoot Augustinians on March 31, 1644 , where he devoted his entire life to genealogy. His works are:

  • Le Palais de l'honneur (1663), which - in addition to the genealogy of the ruling houses of Lorraine and Savoy - contains a complete treatise on heraldry .
  • Le Palais de la gloire (1644) on the genealogy of a number of French, but also non-French families.
  • Science héraldique (1674).

His most important work, however, is the Histoire généalogique de la maison royale de la France et des grands officiers de la couronne (1674, 2 volumes), a genealogy of the French royal family and its most important officials; this work was written on the suggestion of his friend Honoré Caille, Seigneur du Fourny, who in 1712 after Père Anselme's death had a new edition.

Père Anselme lived and died in the Augustinian monastery Couvent des Petits Pères near the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires basilica . His work was taken up and continued by two monks of the Couvent, François Baffard (Père Ange de Sainte-Rosalie) and Paul Lucas (Père Simplicien), who published their first two volumes of a third edition in 1726. This edition later grew to nine folio volumes.

de Guibours published exclusively under his religious name Père Anselme. He and those who worked on his works generally carried out their work on the basis of original documents and referenced them so precisely that it is still of value today.
